Lunching in Louisville

If you're looking for a good lunch spot, these Louisville favorites top the list

When you’re visiting Louisville, the last thing you want to do is waste time Googling around for the nearest lunch spot. What if the menu is too expensive? What if the food isn’t that great? What if it’s only open on Wednesdays? We’ve been there one too many times, so we drafted a list of some of the greatest places to grab a bite in LOU. Add these to your must-visit list and you’ll never be far from some good food.

Gralehaus
Open 7 days a week, 8am to 4pm
1001 Baxter Avenue
Louisville, KY 40204

At Gralehaus, Chef Andy Myers taps into his passion for southern-style cooking using the rich culinary traditions of Kentucky and memories of mothers’ and grandmothers’ cooking for menu inspiration. Kentucky flavor runs thick at Gralehaus, where the seasonally driven menu features the freshest and highest quality local ingredients, produce, and products.  Made-from-scratch breakfast and lunch menus are served daily from 8am – 4pm. We recommend the picnic plate, which is basically the chef’s choice of small bites, cheeses and spreads. So good.

Mayan Cafe
Open Mon-Fri 11pm-2:30pm
813 E. Market Street
Louisville, KY 40206

Mayan Cafe consistently ranks at the top of Louisville’s best restaurant lists. They’re best known for serving excellent Central American food, thanks to Chef Bruce Ucán who grew up on the Yucatan Peninsula. One of the restaurant’s most popular dishes are the lima beans. Yes, you read that right. While we tried to fight it, we eventually relented and ordered some....and wow. These were on another level. Our favorite main dish was the Yucatec Salbutes, two corn tortillas topped with the daily special. You really can’t go wrong here, though. We recommend making a reservation. It’s popular for a reason!

Joella’s Hot Chicken
Open Tues-Thurs: 11-9pm
Fri-Sat: 11-10pm
Sun: 11-9pm
3400 Frankfort Ave
Louisville, KY 40207

While KFC might be headquartered in Louisville, we’re not sending you there for a fried chicken lunch. Take a trip to St. Matthews (address above) or over to Middletown for Joella's Hot Chicken and your taste buds will thank you. This local favorite won Kentucky's Best Hot Chicken award and it's easy to see how they came out on top. They offer six different spice levels, though we highly recommend the Spiked Honey. The flavor is spectacular and more of a sweet mild than a spicy hot. The chicken and waffles are a must, too. Actually, do yourself a favor and order one of everything - it's worth it.

Feast BBQ
Open Tues-Thurs 11am-10pm
Friday & Saturday 11am-12am
909 E. Market Street, Suite 100
Louisville, KY 40206

If you’re looking for some of the best BBQ in Louisville, Feast BBQ should be on your list. Widely known as a top stop, the folks here are masters of the barbecue pit. Their menu is comprised of various cuts of barbecue (sold by the plate, by the pound, or on a sandwich) and sauces and sides are yours for the picking. We highly - HIGHLY - recommend the pulled pork and beef brisket. Again, there’s no wrong choice at this place. Just get there and try it.

Taco Luchador
Open Mon-Thurs 11am-9pm
Friday 11am-10pm
Saturday 12pm-10pm
Sunday 12pm-8pm
938 Baxter Avenue
Louisville, KY 40204

Don’t let the wrestling mask fool you - Taco Luchador is serious about tacos. With an impressive menu of apps, tacos, tortas and sweets, this place has everything you need to fulfill your hunger craving. We highly recommend the mole braised chicken tacos. The sauce is a little spicier than typical mole, but it’s incredibly flavorful and aromatic. Plus, it’s paired perfectly with crispy carnitas tacos, so it really packs in the flavor. You’ll want to arrive early for lunch at Taco Luchador - the space is small and it’s well liked by many, which means a line will quickly form. Don’t let it stop you from going in. You’ll be so glad you did.

Those are five of our go-to lunch places in Louisville, but this list could be never-ending. Where do you like to go? What spot should we try next? Share your favorites with us @lifestylecommunities on Instagram and Facebook.
