We finally made a visit to Nashville’s Proper Bagel, one of the coolest eateries and markets on Belmont Boulevard. The shop opened in early 2016 to a long line of eager diners, and after our first trip, we totally understand why.
Proper Bagel is owned and operated by the Speranza family from New York, and they bring over 35 years of experience with them in the art of traditional baking. What does that mean for you real bagel aficionados? It means you can find kettle-boiled bagels and bialys mixed from scratch and baked in stone-lined ovens each and every day.
We think you’ll be pretty impressed as soon as you walk in the door. The stunning display holds a wide array of smoked fish and various cream-cheese spreads and salads (obviously all made in house), along with numerous baked goods and coffee by Barista Parlor.
We grabbed a seat up front, where the early morning natural light streamed through large windows. They also have some small cafe tables outside and a large community-style table and additional seating in the main room. It doesn’t really matter where you sit, because the menu is the real star of the show.
We tried a few different items, including a plain bagel with cream cheese (hey, you have to check out the basics sometimes) and a ricotta and egg sandwich. Both were exceptional. Both are highly recommended. Apparently, they offer a pretty addictive smashed avocado toast, but we can’t speak from experience on that one. Yet.
They do have a large menu for a bagel shop, and we suggest trying any of the sandwiches, salads, soups and pastries. As for the bagels, your current options include: plain, everything, sesame, bialys, kale, spinach, spinach everything, poppy, pumpernickel, Russian pumpernickel, cinnamon raisin, dark rye, onion, and salt.
Proper Bagel is open Monday - Friday from 7:30am-4:00pm and Saturday & Sunday from 8:00am-4:00pm. If you do stop by for a visit, or if you’ve already been and have some recommendations, please share your experience and photos with us on Facebook and Instagram, @lifestylecommunities. Until then, we’ll be dreaming of our next bagel + cream cheese combo.
