Unexpected Things to Do in Columbus

Whether you’re a native of Columbus or just a fan of the city, you understand that it has a lot to offer. A thriving art scene, nationally-recognized restaurants and noteworthy events make it the place to see and be seen - and that’s really just the beginning. Some of Cbus’ best spots can be found in the most unassuming of locations or right in the heart of it all. Let’s take a look at five experiences or storefronts that have garnered rave reviews.

Studio 35

1247 Grandview Ave

Grandview Heights, Ohio 43212

A favorite local theater that serves traditional movie fare and a killer drink menu is also home to “Bad Movie Night.” Studio 35 is an independent theater and performance space right off Indianola Ave in Clintonville and it’s definitely a must-see spot. The bad movie event happens regularly throughout the year and features screenings of some unintentionally funny films. They offer a schedule of movies that weren’t total flops, too, so check the schedule and plan a visit.

The Kelton House Museum and Garden

586 East Town Street

Columbus, Ohio 43215

Built by Fernando Cortez Kelton, the Kelton House is a beautiful 19th century property near Downtown Columbus in the East Town Street Historic District. Its noteworthy garden provides a secluded place to sit and relax amongst fresh flowers and plants right in the heart of the city. The real photo-worthy moments happen inside, though. You’ll be in awe of the immaculately preserved home, once a shelter for ex-slaves, freed slaves and freeborn blacks and fugitives as part of the Underground Railroad.

Spoonful Records

116 E. Long Street

Columbus, Ohio 43215

Oh, vinyl records. Still one of the best ways to enjoy music. If records are your thing (and they should be), then Spoonful Records is where you want to be. In addition to a really cool space - featuring vintage pinball machines and cozy seating area - visitors can find a music selection that includes rock, jazz and soul as well as some modern releases, local music, and rare titles. Spoonful is open every day except Monday, so stop in and add to your collection.

Jewelweed Floral Studio

122 E. Long Street

Columbus, Ohio 43215

While you’re near Spoonful Records, head a few doors down to Jewelweed Floral Studio, a charming shop full of fresh and artfully handled floral compositions. Once you’re through the doors, you’ll be blown away by the vibrant colors and unique arrangements. Owner Sarah Anne Dixon is a modern florist who puts her touch on the designs with a natural, garden inspired concept. From cacti and succulents to large statement pieces, Jewelweed has it all. Better yet, if you’re hoping to brighten someone’s day, the shop also offers delivery in the Columbus Metropolitan area. Contact them for more details here.

Damn Girl

1151 North High Street

Columbus, Ohio 43215

Just down the street from Barrel on High, you’ll find Skully’s Music Diner, host to a monthly dance party called Damn Girl. Yes, you read that right. On the third Friday of every month, you can don your finest apparel, grab some friends, and head out onto the dance floor. As the founders say, “Damn Girl is a place for people who want to get out and dance to music that isn’t the typical Top 40. Costumes and crazy clothes are always encouraged, but never required. Just make sure to wear your dancing shoes.” Simple enough for us.
