6 Things to Do in St. Matthews

Today we’re leaving the hustle and bustle of city life and heading into one of our favorite suburbs of Louisville‒St. Matthews, Kentucky.  You may be familiar with the area and Mall St. Matthews, one of the largest shopping malls in the state, but the area is also full of small, family-owned shops and restaurants along with a variety of outdoor spaces. We’ve rounded up a few of our favorites below:

Cyclesmith’s Bicycle Shop

3928 Shelbyville Rd

St. Matthews, KY

Located conveniently in the heart of St. Matthews, Cyclesmith’s Bicycle Shop is your one stop shop for all your biking needs.  Offering new and used bikes along with apparel, accessories, and a repair department, their wide range of offerings will satisfy every cyclists’ needs. Make sure to give the resident bike shop dog, Jack, some love while inside!

Plehn’s Bakery

3940 Shelbyville Rd

St. Matthews, KY

A long time resident of the St. Matthews area, Plehn’s Bakery has been family-run since it opened in 1924.  With interiors reminiscent of an old school soda-shop, you can feel the rich history of the store around you. An array of sweets including cakes, cookies, and donuts fill the cases of the bakery along with savory items such as fresh sliced meats and cheeses, homemade soups, and salads.  We suggest trying one of their famous butterfluff rolls or authentic German breads!

Tin Roof

3921 Shelbyville Rd

St. Matthews, KY

If you’re looking for a night out on the town with live music, look no further.  Tin Roof offers nightly events including sets from upcoming artists, trivia, Taco Tuesday and beer pong competitions. Their menu is comprised of a large range of southern-inspired and made from scratch bar food.  You can’t go wrong with an order of the loaded tots! Head over to their website (https://www.tinrooflouisville.com/calendar) for a list of upcoming events.

Steel City Pops & Quills Coffee

117 St. Matthews Ave

St. Matthews, KY

Located in the former fire station in St. Matthews, Steel City Pops and Quills Coffee have combined efforts under one roof despite the differing temperatures of their products.  As a sweet treat, Steel City Pops offers all-natural, gluten-free, gourmet popsicles that can be customized with their unique dipping station. To get your daily caffeine fix, Quills Coffee serves up handcrafted espresso and fresh brewed coffee. If you want the best of both worlds, try the Popfogato; it’s a Steel City vanilla pop melting in a shot of Quill’s blacksmith espresso. Yum!

Coal’s Artisan Pizza

3724 Frankfort Ave

St. Matthews, KY

As the winner of Louisville Magazine’s “Best Pizza” Award in 2018, you know that Coal’s Artisan Pizza is serving up delicious pies.  Their coal-fired pizzas are created with a speciality crust specific to Coal’s; the result is one of the most flavorful, light, and crispy crusts that we’ve ever had the pleasure of tasting. The menu is extensive so good luck choosing just one! If you are struggling to choose, our recommendation is the Whiskey Row pizza comprised of bourbon brown sugar glazed pork belly, mozzarella, arugula, diced tomatoes, and finished with a garlic red onion aioli!

Brown Park

Kresge Way & Browns Lane

St. Matthews, KY

Brown Park is 28 acre park equipped with several asphalt walking trails, a large pavilion with picnic tables, grills, and a play area for children. It may just become your favorite local spot to walk your dog, throw a frisbee with friends, or host a summertime barbeque.
