A Weekend With Your Pet in Louisville

Did you know Louisville is a dog-friendly city? With parks, trails, specialty shops and more, this vibrant town has something to offer you and your four-legged companion. We’ve got a lot of spots we love and recommend for some fun, exercise or relaxation that you and your dog can enjoy. Here are a few of many, but make sure you check each for operating hours and rules before you visit.

The Dirty Tease

This dog-friendly, custom t-shirt shop specializes in creating one-of-a-kind tees made while you wait. Design restrictions are limited and they’ll work hard to create nearly every look you can think of. They even have several versions of pre-made dog-themed shirts, too, so if you need to grab something and go, they’re ready for you. While dogs are welcome, they ask that you keep them on a leash while inside the store. Find them on Bardstown Road!

Louisville Waterfront Park

Does 85 acres sound like enough space for you and your dog? We think so, too. The Louisville Waterfront Park is definitely worth a visit, especially for its spectacular views of the city and Ohio River. It’s free to enter and hosts more than 120 events every year, like concerts, festivals, charity walks and more.

The park is open daily from 6am-11pm, but they do have some rules to check out before you stop by. You can find more info on their website, but they do require that all dogs be kept on leash and they do not allow pets on the playgrounds, waterplay, water feature or Big Four Bridge.

Brown Park

Located right next to our community in St. Matthews, Brown Park is 28 acres of dog-frolicking bliss. The park is just a few blocks away from Arthur K. Draut Park, so you and your pet can walk back and forth between each. Cool bit of history for you: one path within Brown Park leads to the original family cemetery of the James Graham Brown family, who donated the land for the park to the City of St. Matthews in 1977.

The park is open to the public daily from dusk to dawn and offers plenty of open areas, large pavilion with picnic tables, BBQ grills and free parking onsite.

Joella’s Chicken

All that running around has likely worked up your appetite, so we’ve got a good spot for you to cure those hunger pangs. Joella's Hot Chicken is a pet-friendly restaurant on Frankfort Ave. in Louisville and one of our most favorite spots for hot chicken ever. This particular location has about a dozen tables outside for dogs and their owners, so your pet can join you for some chicken, brined overnight and fried golden brown (they offer a range of spice levels, including Southern, Tweener, Spiked Honey, Inferno, and for those with no thoughts of well-being for your taste buds, Fire-In-Da-Hole).

Joella’s does not offer table service, so keep in mind that you’ll need to tie up your dog outside before stepping in to order.

Sunergos Coffee

Let’s end this weekend adventure with some caffeine to prep you for your next trip out on the town. We’ve only been to the 5th Street location so far, which is likely a bit to tight of a squeeze inside for you and your pet. The Preston shop, though, is a great spot for the both of you, offering four pet-friendly outdoor tables. They’re open Monday through Saturday from 6:30am-9pm and Sunday from 7am-8pm. We highly recommend the cappuccino, but they have a little bit of everything from light roasts to flaky pastries. Hard to go wrong.

That should get you started on a fun weekend with your pet in Louisville, but we’re always looking for more ideas. Feel free to share your pet-friendly spots with us @lifestylecommunities on Facebook or Instagram, or simply tag us in your photos when you’re out and about.
